NY Times Rob Walker to Deliver Keynote Address
New York Universitys Institute for Public Knowledge (IPK) will host a two-day conference, Blowing up the Brand: Critical Perspectives on Promotional Paradigms, on May 8-9 at 20 Cooper Square, 5th floor. The conference is sponsored by IPK, NYUs Council for Media and Culture, and Drexel University. Admission to conference events is open to the public. A picture ID is required for entry.
The conference will examine promotion in relation to contemporary culture. Creative cities, celebrity diplomacy, branded philanthropy, and YouTube identities are some of the symptoms and effects of what sociologist Andrew Wernick has termed promotional culture, the extension of promotional discourses, practices, and performances into virtually all areas of public life.
Rob Walker, author of Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and What Who We Are and New York Times Magazine Consumed columnist will deliver a public talk at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, May 8.
