On Friday April 3, 2009, NYU Wagner’s International Public Service Association (IPSA) Spring Conference will host a panel discussion entitled “Living Migration: Spanning the Local & Global Divide,” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 9th floor of Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, New York, N.Y., with a keynote address by Guillermo Linares, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
Immigration is often expressed as a local concern, separate from global migration and development issues. Yet the experience of immigrants spans beyond local realities. “Living Migration” brings the local and global conversations together to create a unified dialogue. We will explore how our local experiences in New York City, the quintessential American city of immigrants, are enmeshed in global migration flows and the impacts of migration on both sending and receiving countries. The conference invites public officials, practitioners, academics, and students to examine policy opportunities and grassroots action on global and local levels, as well as the potential impact of these policies and actions in New York City. The panelists are:
- Devesh Kapur, Professor for the Study of Contemporary India and Director for the Center of Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania,
- Michael Piore, Professor of Economics and Political Economy and Director of the MIT-Mexico Program for the Center for International Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
- Janice Fine, Professor of Labor Studies and Employment Relations, Rutgers University, and Senior Fellow for Organizing and Policy at the Center for Community Change (CCC),
- Guillermo Linares, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (keynote speaker).
