The Catherine B. Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship at New York University has announced the selection of eight graduate Fellows and six undergraduate Scholars for 2009.
Headquartered at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, NYU Reynolds provides its undergraduate Scholars with $40,000 over two years of study, a paid summer internship and an intensive curricular and co-curricular component. The newly chosen Scholars are:
- Genesis Briggs (Tisch), who will work to expand her production company/independent record label Open Sky Artworks with artistic works by youth for youth
- Anna Escobar (College of Arts and Science), who plans to establish a network of students to engage in social issue advocacy through the medium of documentary film
- Erika Hval (College of Arts and Science, transferring to Steinhardt School of Education, Culture and Human Development), whose focus is improving the effectiveness of publicly subsidized food and nutrition programs
- Nathaniel Reuter (College of Arts and Science), who wants to start an outdoor education program for young people that instills an appreciation for the environment
- Patricia Schneidewind (College of Arts and Science), who is working on building a secondary school for girls in Tanzania
- Ana Smukowski (Stern School of Business), who wants to work within companies and organizations to create change and incorporate socially responsible practices.
The new graduate Fellows — chosen from more than 1,000 applicants from eleven different NYU schools — will receive $50,000 over two years of study, as well as intensive curricular and supplementary opportunities to enhance his or her chosen course of study, including dedicated academic programming, a special required class, the NYU Reynolds Speaker Series, and many other activities. The Fellows are:
- Dr. Alexandre Carvalho (Master’s Program in Global Public Health). A physician, Dr. Carvalho seeks to implement “Light, Camera, and Health in Action!,” which mingles art, health and sustainable development to bring awareness and adequate information to communities about the broad determinants of biological diseases
- Eliana Godoy (Wagner). The founder of Art for Change, a nonprofit dedicated to innovative art and media programs that inspire people to take an active role in their social welfare, Godoy seeks to advocate for the creation of microloans for business cooperatives and social ventures
- Anurag Gupta (School of Law). The founder and director of Opening Possibilities Asia, which works to advance teaching and learning in Burma, Gupta plans to use his education to foster partnerships to improve teacher quality, student achievement, and access to basic resources as part of this effort
- Yul-San Liem (Gallatin), an artist who for the past eight years has focused her creative work on issues confronting Koreans on the Korean peninsula and in the diaspora
- Benjamin Locke (School of Law), who will work to create community-based strategies for pursuing human rights claims and to promote a new conceptualization of the role and tools of the attorney who confronts a justice problem.
- Courtney Montague (Wagner), the co founder and former executive director of Global Volunteer Network Foundation, an international nonprofit that works to eradicate extreme child poverty in Africa, Asia and South America.
