Mercer St. Dog Run Opens after NYU-Funded Repairs
Every dog has its day, and with the re-opening today of the renovated Mercer St. Dog Run, today is it for downtown canines and their human companions. The re-opening event begins at 5:30 pm today at the northwest corner of Mercer St. and Houston St.
The dog run abuts NYUs main sports center and was constructed at the time the NYU gym was built in the 1980s. About 200 dog-owners - mostly from SoHo and NoHo - are signed up as users for it. Over time, it had fallen into significant disrepair.
However, a just-completed four-week repair effort - funded by NYU - addressed sunken areas of the dog run, brought the entire asphalt surface to grade, created a slope to allow for proper water drainage, replaced the fence, and installed new benches. With these repairs, the space is now truly fit for a dog.
Beth Gottlieb, president of the Mercer/Houston Dog Run Association, said, One word: Wow! The renovated run is just wonderful. What a pleasure to walk on the flat expanse of asphalt, and no more worries about tripping. Every aspect of the project went seamlessly, and were grateful to NYU. Ms. Gottlieb and her dog Romeo are long-time users of the Mercer St. Dog Run.
The official re-opening ceremony will include doggie bags and raffle items from two local businesses, Towne House Grooming and The Pet Bar.
