The jazz quartet Hiromi’s Sonicbloom will perform a program of original compositions and standards from her latest album, Beyond Standard, for one-night only on Thursday, Feb.5 at 8 p.m. at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University. A composer and pianist born in Hamamatsu, Japan, Hiromi presents an energetic performance that blends jazz, progressive rock, classical, and fusion in her compositions, earning her accolades and awards throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. Tickets are $25 and are available at www.skirballcenter.nyu.edu, by phone at (212) 352-3101, or at the box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Hiromi’s indefinable style and unclassifiable compositions make her a must see for anyone that cares about the future of jazz or the next generation of music. The 29-year-old mixes sounds and cultures with deft and rebellious ease. She was mentored by giants Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, and Chick Corea. The quartet comprises Hiromi (piano and keys), David Fiuczynski (guitar), Tony Grey (bass), and Mauricio Zottarelli (drums). “Her exciting mixture of musical genres and high-energy playing is made even more thrilling by her impressive technique and complex ideas,” said jazz music legend Marian McPartland.
This show is one of Skirball’s “Project 566: What’s Next Series,” which is a lineup of artists for the 21st century - emerging, eclectic, and always electric. Upcoming shows include: comedian Zach Galifianakis (March 5, $40), Jazz Mandolin Project: How Much Land Does a Man Need? (April 24, $25), and VOX: Showcasing American Composers (May 1-2, free).
The Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, now in its fifth year, is the premiere venue for the presentation of cultural and performing arts events for NYU and lower Manhattan. For a current listing of the Skirball Center’s 2008-2009 season of events visit: www.skirballcenter.nyu.edu.
