Deutsches Haus at New York University will host four special events in January. Most events take place at Deutsches Haus, located at 42 Washington Mews (at University Place), unless otherwise noted. On Wednesday, January 21, at 6:30 p.m., Deutches Haus will co-sponsor the panel discussion “Fleeing Fascism: German-speaking Jews in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.” Moderators are Jo Labanyi, director of NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, and Kathrin DiPaola, Deutsches Haus director. Participants include Marion Kaplan of NYU, Sibylle Quack, visiting professor, CUNY Graduate Center, and Leo Sptizer, Dartmouth College. This event takes place at the King Juan Carlos Center, 53 Washington Square South. It is co-sponsored with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the NYU Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, and the King Juan Carlos Center.
On Friday, January 23, at 6:30 p.m., New York poet Margot Scharpenberg will present a reading, “Verwandeln (Transform): 60 verstreute und neue Gedichte” in German.
On Tuesday, January 27, at 7 p.m., a staged reading of the play Lustgarten by Swiss playwright Sabine Harbeke will take place. The reading will be in German. This is part of the hotINK International Play Reading Festival. Visit www.hotink.org for more information.
On Friday, Janaury 30, at 6 p.m., the film Sommer vorm Balkon (Summer in Berlin) will be screened. This 2005 film was directed by Andreas Dresen and is in German, with English subtitles.
