The New York University Creative Writing Program Spring Readings Series opens on January 22 with a reading by novelist and essayist Francine Prose. Prose is currently the Lillian Vernon Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the university. All readings take place in NYU’s Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House, 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted; and are free and open to the public. Thurs., Jan. 22, 7 p.m. Reading: Novelist and essayist Francine Prose will read from her work. She is the author of 15 books including Blue Angel, a finalist for the 2000 National Book Award. Her most recent book is Goldengrove, which was released to immediate critical acclaim. Other works include: Reading Like a Writer, a New York Times bestseller; A Changed Man; After, an award-winning novel for young adults; and The Lives of the Muses: Nine Women & the Artists They Inspired, a national bestseller.
Fri., Jan. 23, 7 p.m. Emerging Writers Reading Series: This series showcases the graduate student talent of NYU’s Creative Writing Program, with an established writer as special guest. Lisa Jarnot is the author of several volumes of poetry, including Black Dog Songs and Night Scenes. Her forthcoming book is a biography of the poet Robert Duncan. Note venue: KGB Bar, 85 E. 4th St.
Thurs., Jan. 29, 7 p.m. The Paris Review Salon features acclaimed fiction writers Colum McCann and Padgett Powell in a reading hosted by editor Chris Cox. The recipient of numerous literary awards, McCann is the author of two collections of short stories and four novels, including This Side of Brightness, Dancer, and Zoli, all international best sellers. Powell’s Edisto is currently being reissued by FSG, and his new book, The Interrogative Mood, is forthcoming from Ecco. He is the author of three other novels and two collections of short fiction. Co-sponsored by The Paris Review.
Fri., Jan. 30, 5 p.m. Reading: Authors Judith Baumel and Susan Orlean read as part of the “Friday Happy Hour” Reading Series. Baumel is the author of Now and The Weight of Numbers, which won the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. A poet, critic and translator, she is associate professor of English and director of the Creative Writing Program at Adelphi University. Orlean has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992 and is the author of the national bestseller, The Orchid Thief. She is currently finishing a biography of the dog actor, Rin Tin Tin.
