Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, was recently elected to the board of trustees of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a philanthropic, not-for-profit grantmaking institution based in New York City. She joins the Sloan Foundation’s 12-member board immediately.

“The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has a rich history of fostering a deeper appreciation of the world around us. I look forward to being a part of that great tradition,” said Campbell.

Campbell has been the dean of the Tisch School since 1991. In June 2007, she was nominated to head the New York State Council on the Arts, and later confirmed as chair. She also sits on the board of trustees of the American Academy in Rome. Campbell received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from Swarthmore College, a master’s in art history from Syracuse University, and a doctorate in humanities from Syracuse. She holds numerous honorary degrees.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, established in 1934, makes grants to support original research and broad-based education related to science, technology, and economic performance; and to improve the quality of American life. The Foundation believes that a carefully reasoned and systematic understanding of the forces of nature and society, when applied inventively and wisely, can lead to a better world for all.
