New York University’s Catalan Center will host “Thirty Years of Autonomy?: The Catalan Statute of Autonomy, 1979-2009,” on Thursday, December 10th, 6:30 p.m., at the King Juan Carlos Center, 53 Washington Square South (between Thompson and Sullivan Streets).

The year 2009 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the 1979 Catalan Statute of Autonomy, approved one year after the 1978 Spanish Constitution.

The Catalan Center has invited two distinguished scholars, Professor John Casey of Baruch College, and Professor Carles Boix of Princeton University, to discuss the general context of the State of the Autonomies in Spain and similar federalist systems in other countries, as well as the specific situation in Catalonia. Dr. Andrew Davis, Delegate of the Government of Catalonia to the United States, will moderate the discussion.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 212.998.8255 or e-mail ml153@nyu.edu. Reporters wishing to attend may call Christopher James at 212.998.6876 or email christopher.james@nyu.edu

The 2006 Catalan Statute of Autonomy (Catalan Charter), approved by the Catalan Parliament, the Spanish Congress, by popular referendum in Catalonia, and signed by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, is awaiting the verdict of the Spanish Supreme Court three years after appeal by the Popular Party. In an unprecedented move, on November 26 twelve newspapers in Catalonia, including “La Vanguardia” and “El Periodico,” signed a joint editorial warning of the negative effects of a ruling curtailing the provisions of the Charter.

This conversation could not be timelier, and we hope you will join us for an informative and scholarly discussion of the current state of autonomic affairs in Catalonia.
