New York University College of Nursing announced today that Jeremiah A. Barondess, MD, is joining the College of Nursing’s board of advisors, which is comprised of local and national leaders in health care who serve as ambassadors for the College to the external community. Board members also support the Dean with long range planning and help increase resources for future development.

Dr. Barondess is the President Emeritus of the American College of Physicians, and Past President of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Osler Society and the American Clinical and Climatological Association. He has written extensively on clinical matters in internal medicine, medical education, clinical ethics, the training of internists and major issues in the health of urban populations.

“Jerry Barondess is an exciting addition to our Board of Advisors, due to his dedication to innovation in healthcare and commitment to addressing the challenges of primary care in America, as well as the needs of an aging population,” said Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, The Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and Dean of the NYU College of Nursing. “It is a great honor to have Dr. Barondess affiliated with the College in such a significant and meaningful way.”

Dr. Barondess earned his MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, graduating with honors. His early clinical training was on the Osler Medical Service of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and this was followed by two years as a Research Fellow in Virology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his clinical training at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and then joined the faculty of the Cornell University Medical College. His service included appointment as Associate Chairman of the Department of Medicine and the William T. Foley Distinguished Professorship in Clinical Medicine. Over the years he has received a number of awards, including four honorary degrees and election to Honorary Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians of London.

During his tenure as President of the New York Academy of Medicine he turned its programmatic activities primarily to urban health, and transformed the institution into a research-intensive enterprise with a large fulltime staff, extensive grant support and, through publications, advocacy, collaborative arrangements and public service appointments on the part of its professional staff, created a widened sphere of influence for the Academy and its programs.
