A schedule of events follows:
- Fri., May 1, 7 p.m. Yiddish and Irish Song: Since their GRAMMY® Award-winning work in The Klezamatics, Susan McKeown and Lorin Sklamberg have begun an exciting musical collaboration and exploration of their song traditions, culminating in the recording of an album. Introduced by Eileen Reilly, associate director, Glucksman Ireland House.
- Sat., May 2, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Brian Friel Symposium: A one-day symposium celebrates the 80th birthday of distinguished playwright Brian Friel, author of the Tony Award-winning Dancing at Lughnasa and Philadelphia, Here I Come!, among many other plays. Academics from Queen’s University, Belfast; Trinity College, Dublin; and University College, Dublin, join members of the theatre community, including Patrick Mason, winner of a Tony Award as best director for Dancing at Lughnasa and former artistic director of the Abbey Theatre, in discussing Friel’s works. Visit www.irelandhouse.as.nyu.edu for a detailed program.
- Tues., May 5, 7 p.m. Reading: Irish playwright and novelist, and two-time Booker nominee, Sebastian Barry, reads from The Secret Scripture (Faber, 2008), the story of Roseanne, an Irish centenarian who has spent most of her adult life in the Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital, and Dr. Gene, the psychiatrist who must now prepare her for the emotional upheaval that the hospital’s imminent closure will precipitate.
- Thurs., May 7, 7 p.m. Airneál na Bealtaine: An evening of traditional music and song with NYU students and local musicians, hosted by Irish Language Lecturer Pádraig Ó Cearúill.
- Fri., May 8, 9 p.m. The Blarney Star Concert Series: Paddy Keenan & John Walsh. A virtuoso on the uilleann pipes, Keenan achieved international renown with the Bothy Band in the 1970s. He is one of the great exponents of the “low whistle,” an instrument with an intimate, breathy tone that makes it a perfect vehicle for slow airs. Keenan will be accompanied by Walsh, a superb Kilkenny-born guitarist who now lives in Yonkers and has released his own solo recording, Aon, Do, Tri.
