New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies inaugurates its new Academy for Grantmaking and Funder Education” on Monday October 6, 2008 at 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., NYU’s Kimmel Center, Room 905-907, 60 Washington Square South, NYC. Jack Rosenthal, president of The New York Times Company Foundation, and Ariel Zwang, CEO of Safe Horizon, will be speaking about philanthropy from the different perspectives of a funder (NY Times Foundation) and of a non-profit service provider (Safe Horizon). The new Academy—a program of the Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising at SCPS—provides a full-range of non-credit courses, seminars and intensive programs for grantmakers, foundation executives and philanthropists.

Rosenthal has been a reporter, editor, and executive at The New York Times since 1969. In 2000, he came to the Foundation, which makes grants to arts, education and other organizations, manages the Neediest Cases Fund, and administers The Times’s College Scholarship Program. Mr. Rosenthal is a founder and chairman of ReServe, Inc., which connects older adults with stipend-paying jobs in public and private nonprofit organizations.

Zwang joined Safe Horizon (http://www.safehorizon.org/index.php) in July 2008, coming from New York Cares where for seven years she was the executive director. Previously, Zwang served as a special assistant to HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo in the Clinton administration. In NYC, Zwang has directed operations for the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation, served as Special Assistant to the Chancellor of the New York Board of Education, and she serves on the Board of Directors for the Points of Light Foundation and is on the Board of Trustees for Miss Porter’s School.
