Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, located at One Washington Mews (at Fifth Avenue), will host several special events in October, including a lecture by The Very Reverend Dr. John Dunlop CBE, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, on “The Northern Ireland Peace Process” on October 22. Admission is free to members of Ireland House and those with an NYU ID; for all others, $10 admission to regular events and $15 for Blarney Star Concert Series events.   • Thurs., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Lecture: “Yeats, and the Tragic Sense of Life” by Nicholas Grene, Trinity College, Dublin. His talk his based on his new book, Yeats’s Poetic Codes (OUP, 2008). Co-sponsored by the W.B.Yeats Society of New York.
  • Fri., Oct. 3, 9 p.m. Blarney Star Concert Series: Mike and Mary Rafferty with Dónal Clancy. Flute-player Mike Rafferty has had an enormous influence on many Irish American musicians, particularly his daughter Mary, a former member of Cherish the Ladies. Mary’s husband, Dónal Clancy, a member of the Waterford-based group Danú, provides guitar accompaniment.
  • Thurs., Oct. 9, 7 p.m. Book launch: Acclaimed author Peter Quinn launches a new edition of his lavishly praised novel of Civil War New York, The Banished Children of Eve (The Overlook Press, 2008). Quinn is also the author of Looking for Jimmy and Hour of the Cat.
  • Thurs., Oct. 16, 7 p.m. Short film screening: We Live in Ireland (21 min., 2008), a film by NYU student Yingying Ziang shot while on an NYU Presidential Honors Scholars visit to Dublin. The film explores Chinese immigration to Ireland. A panel discussion follows the film featuring the filmmaker and NYU professors Marion R. Casey and John P. Waters. Co-sponsored by Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program & Institute, NYU.
  • Wed., Oct. 22, 7 p.m. The Irish Institute of New York Lecture Series: “The Northern Ireland Peace Process: a tricky business with awkward moral judgments” by The Very Reverend Dr. John Dunlop CBE, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Dunlop was the minister of Rosemary Presbyterian Church in Belfast from 1978-2004. He is the author of A Precarious Belonging: Presbyterians and the Conflict in Ireland. Note venue: NYU Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, rm. 914. Admission note: free to all.
  • Thurs., Oct. 30, 7 p.m. Discussion: Distinguished journalist and author of The Basque Country: A Cultural History, Paddy Woodworth compares the Northern Irish and Basque conflicts. Co-sponsored by the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, NYU.
