New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development will present a weekend-long conference for teachers, educators, and community activists, “Preemptive Education: Language, Identity, Power,” on Fri. Sept. 26 though Sun. Sept. 28 at NYU’s Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East at Waverly Place.
The conference examines the issues that affect today’s youth, while providing creative and practical resources to address them. Using the power of spoken word poetry and hip-hop as the lens to explore language and privilege, participants will learn best practices in student-centered pedagogy from professionals in the fields of education, youth development, and spoken word and hip-hop. Combining performance, panel discussion, and professional development workshops, Preemptive Education will provide comprehensive opportunities for educators of all levels.
Education reporters interested in attending are encouraged to call Tim Farrell, NYU’s Office of Public Affairs, at 212.998.6797 or email tim.farrell@nyu.edu.
The weekend opens with a free public panel and performance, Fri. Sept. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m., Silver Center, Room 703. Following readings by young poets, a discussion on language, identity, and power will take place, and will feature David Kirkland, assistant professor of teaching and learning at NYU Steinhardt.
The conference is organized by UrbanWord NYC, the Hip Hop Theater Festival, NYU’s Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, and NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning. A full schedule of events is available at http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/conference/preemptive_education.
