Berlin, New Years Eve, 1929. An American writer in search of adventure takes up with the bohemian Sally Bowles, a performer at a decadent cabaret, on the eve of the Naziss rise to power. The story brilliantly intermingles the sexual underworld of Wiemar Berlin with its moral and economic collapse. Under the leering gaze of the Emcee, the audience watches the fateful courtship of Fraulein Schneider and her Jewish boarder, Herr Schultz, as the ranks of the Nazis rise. Hearts grow hot, cold, hard. Life is a cabaret, Sally sings. Come to the cabaret.
Cabaret features the music of John Kander, the songs of Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff, and is based on a play by John van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. The Drama Department production, featuring 26 young actors, is directed by Jean Randich, adjunct teacher, with musical direction by Jana Zielonka, and choreography by Tony Stevens.
