The New York Creative Writing Program Fall 2008 Reading Series continues in November with a number of special readings and events. Most events are held in the program’s Greenwich Village home, the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House, located at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted. - Thurs., Nov. 6, 7 p.m. State-to-State Poets Exchange: This inaugural program connects New York and the Twin Cities, with a reading by poet William Waltz, author of Zoo Music. The reading will be followed by a moderated discussion with Robert N. Casper, publisher of jubilat, and Eric Lorberer, poet and editor of Rain Taxi Review of Books. Co-sponsored with the Poetry Society of America and Rain Taxi Review of Books.
- Fri., Nov. 7, 4p.m. reception, 5 p.m. reading Friday Happy Hour Reading: Walter Mosley is the best-selling author of 30 books, and his work has been translated into 21 languages. Best known for his gritty Easy Rawlins mysteries, he has most recently authored The Right Mistake, which was published this fall. He has won many awards, including the Anisfield Wolf Award, an honor given to books that have made important contributions to the understanding of racism and appreciation of the rich diversity of human culture.
- Thurs., Nov. 13, 7 p.m. The New Salon: Poets in Conversation features award-winning poet Terrance Hayes in conversation with Robert N. Casper, publisher of jubilat. Hayes is the author of Wind in a Box; Hip Logic, which won the National Poetry Series; and Muscular Music, winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. An associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, he has also received a Whiting Writers Award and a Pushcart Prize, among other honors.
- Fri., Nov. 14, 7 p.m. Emerging Writers Reading Series: NYU Creative Writing graduate students read with featured guest Aimee Nezhukumatathil, author of At the Drive-In Volcano, winner of the Balcones Prize, and Miracle Fruit, which won Foreword Magazine’s Poetry Book of the Year Award. Note location: KGB Bar, 85 E. 4th St.
- Fri., Nov. 20, 7 p.m. Fiction Reading and Conversation: Pulitzer-Prize winning author Edward P. Jones reads and discusses his work with NYU Creative Writing professor Chuck Wachtel. Jones, who has received a MacArthur Fellowship, is the author of The Known World, which won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and the Lannan Literary Award. His first collection of short stories, Lost in the City, won the PEN/Hemingway Award; and his second collection, All Aunt Hagar’s Children, was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award.
- Fri., Nov. 21, 7 p.m. Poetry Reading: Acclaimed New York poets read selections from Alhambra Poetry Calendar 2009 and from their own work. A desk calendar and a poetry anthology in one, this book features a poem a day and showcases favorite classics in English poetry, as well as new and established contemporary poets. Co-sponsored by Alhambra Publishing.
