“Downtown: Archiving the Alternative Art Scene,” a panel discussion held in conjunction with the current exhibition at New York University’s Fales Library, “A.I.R. Gallery: The History Show, Archival Materials from 1972 to the Present,” on view through December 12, will take place on Tuesday, November 18, at 6 p.m. The panel, co-hosted by the A.I.R. Panelists include:
Dena Muller - executive director of ArtTable, a national membership organization for women leaders in the visual arts; former director of A.I.R. Gallery, the first artist-run, not-for-profit space for women artists in the country.
Marvin J. Taylor - director of the Fales Library and Special Collections at NYU; founder of the Downtown Collection at the Fales Library, which documents the post- 1975 art scene that developed in SoHo and the Lower East Side; editor of The Downtown Book: New York Art Scene, 1974-1984.
Martha Wilson - performance artist and founding director of Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc., a museum she established in her TriBeCa storefront loft in lower Manhattan, which, since its inception in 1976, has presented and preserved temporal art.
The panel will be moderated by Kat Griefen, director of A.I.R. Gallery since 2006 and the New York coordinator of the Feminist Art Project.
