NYU’s Bike Share system was funded by a “Green Grant” from the Sustainability Task Force http://www.nyu.edu/sustainability/ at NYU. Modeled after the Velíb program in Paris, this is a student led initiative, with its goal to make bicycles available to students, staff, and faculty for free, casual use around campus.

The pilot program is equipped with 30 easy to ride bicycles, uniform and almost new, which are distributed between two hubs: the residence hall at Seventh Street and behind Tisch Hall on West 4th Street. People can register for the bikes over the internet using their university ID number. Their ID Cards are used to swipe and retrieve the bikes at a designated time. The reservation system and additional information is on-line here: http://www.nyu.edu/sustainability/bike.share
