Winner of 2007 Constantiner Fellowship in the Department of Photography & Imaging An exhibition of 12 color archival inkjet prints, entitled Under Observation: Portraits of Young Mothers, by alumna Alexandra Diracles, who is the recipient of the 2007 Constantiner Fellowship award in the Department of Photography & Imaging, Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, at New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts, will go on view December 5. The fellowship enables one graduating senior in the Department to pursue a project based in New York City.
Under Observation: Portraits of Young Mothers will remain on view through January 10, 2009 in the Window Gallery at 721 Broadway. Work in this gallery can be viewed from the sidewalk at 721 Broadway at Waverly Place. For further information, call 212.998.1930, or visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.
Leon and Michaela Constantiner, who created the fellowship in 2004, are photography collectors interested in supporting young artists. Their collection of Marilyn Monroe photographs has been exhibited at The Brooklyn Museum.
Diracles, who was born in Minnesota but now lives in New York City, used the Constantiner fellowship grant to photograph 9 young New York City mothers and their children. She says the photographs, taken in the studio, seek to communicate the lack of community, and the often skeptical opinions from the general public that these young mothers experience on a day-to-day basis. They are both a critique and a celebration, according to the artist, as the works focus on the symbols and interests of women who are growing up, in many ways, along with their children.
The Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts is a four-year B.F.A. program centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. Situated within a university, the program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum and a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts.
