Renowned Harvard Law Prof Laurence Tribe to Speak
With its traditional graduation site - Washington Square Park - under renovation, on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 NYU will hold its Commencement in The House that Ruth Built, an iconic setting that has not only hosted historic sporting events but international political figures, papal visits, and key moments in New York history.
In announcing the names of the Commencement honorees, NYU President John Sexton and Board of Trustees Chairman Martin Lipton thank the Yankees for their gracious hospitality in hosting the event.
Laurence Tribe - A renowned scholar of constitutional law, supreme court practitioner, and the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School - will speak on behalf of the honorary degree recipients. He will receive a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa
This years other honorary doctorate recipients will be:
- Thomas Buergenthal - a Judge on the International Court of Justice; he will receive a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa.
- Michael J. Fox - renowned actor; he will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts degree, honoris causa.
- Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi - Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, Inc.; she will receive a Doctor of Commercial Science degree, honoris causa.
- Ngũgĩ wa Thiongo - author and Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature; he will receive a Doctor of Letters degree, honoris causa.
Michael Strahan, defensive end for the Super Bowl XLII champion NY Giants and possessor of one of the most distinguished records for a defensive end in football history, will receive NYUs Lewis Rudin Award for Exemplary Service to New York City for 2008.
The 2008 Albert Gallatin Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Society will be awarded to Constance Silver - alumna, social worker, and philanthropist.
