The 25 works by the 25 photographers featured in the exhibition 25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, Volume 2, comprise a wide range of approaches to photography, including straight photography; documentary essays; highly personal and expressionistic stories; staged, spontaneous, or experimental images; and surreal tableaux.
The exhibition is held in conjunction with the publication of the book by the same name, a CDS Books volume published by powerHouse Books and the Center for Documentary Studies, and edited by Iris Tillman Hill. The exhibition and book, showcasing the winners of the third 25 Under 25 competition selected by renowned photographer Sylvia Plachy, explore the theme “transitions”: what it means to be in-between, in flux, at odds, in a new state of being-personally, locally, nationally, or internationally.
25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, Volume 2 will open on May 29 and be on view through June 28 at the Tisch School of the Arts, Gulf + Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 pm Saturdays. The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free. Photo identification is required for access to the building. For further information, call 212.998.1930.
According to the organizers, 25 Under 25 presents a wide array of photographs reflecting the world as seen through young (under 25 years old) but sophisticated eyes-the devastation from Katrina; the battle-weary soldiers and civilian casualties of the Iraq War; explicit explorations of sexuality; urban and suburban landscapes. These images, whether of people or of what people leave behind, show us that the human imprint is everywhere, moving, altering, desiring, and aspiring to permanence.
Two of the 25 photographers represented are alumni (in bold, below) from the Department of Photography & Imaging in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. The photographers are: Kathryn Parker Almanas, Kim Badawi, Gina Brocker, Kitra Cahana, Rose Cromwell, Cary Dolan, Sean Donnelly, Nick Freeman, Rick Gershon, Ami Howard, Adam Kuehl, Brian Lesteberg, Elizabeth Looke-Stewart, Futoshi Miyagi, Greg Mrotek, Eleanor G. Oakes, Ashley Poole, Lissa Rivera, Elizabeth Claire Rose, Tamara Rosenblum, Irina Rozovsky, Will Steacy, Michael Harlan Turkell, Peter van Agtmael, and Beatriz Wallace.
The Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts is a four-year B.F.A. program centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. Situated within New York University, the program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum and a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts.
powerHouse Books, world-renowned and critically acclaimed publisher, is best known for a diverse publishing program-specialized in fine art, documentary, pop culture, fashion, and celebrity books. The publisher has blazed a trail through the staid book publishing industry, releasing books that have sparked cultural trends and redefined commonly held perceptions of the purpose and role of art books in contemporary culture. While much is known of its books, little is known of the people who have made powerHouse Books a global name.
CDS Books is the imprint of the famed Center for Documentary Studies, where DoubleTake magazine was founded. This is the second “25 Under 25” to be published by powerHouse Books in association with CDS Books at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The series will feature a new volume every few years.
Sylivia Plachy has received a Guggenheim fellowship as well as the Women in Photography International Distinguished Photographer Award. For over eight years the Village Voice published a weekly photograph of Plachy’s; the book of this work, Sylvia Plachy’s Unguided Tour (Aperture), won the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for the Best Publication in 1990. Among Plachy’s other books are Red Light (powerHouse), Self-Portrait with Cows Going Home (Aperture), and Goings on about Town: Photographs for The New Yorker (Aperture/The New Yorker).
Iris Tillman Hill edited the first “25 Under 25”, copublished by powerHouse and CDS Books and co-edited Beyond the Barricades: Photographs by Twenty South African Photographers (Aperture). She has edited books by Larry Towell, Mitch Epstein, and Wendy Ewald, among others.
