Third of 4 Shows Featuring Thesis Projects from the Class of 2008 Opens March 27, 2008

An exhibition featuring a wide variety of works in photography, digital imaging, and multimedia, including more than 30 color photographs, 20 black-and-white photographs, four multimedia installations, four illustrations and a children’s book by 11 graduating seniors from the class of 2008 in the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television will open March 27, 2008. It will remain on view at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts through April 19, 2008.

Entitled, SHOW THREE 2008, the show is the third in a series of four exhibitions that will eventually showcase the work of the entire graduating class in a BFA exhibition. It is installed in Gulf + Western Gallery (rear lobby) and the 8th Floor Gallery at 721 Broadway (at Waverly Place). Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free. Photo identification is required for access to the building. For further information, call 212.998.1930 or visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.

The exhibition features artists: Bess Adler, who documents the world of body display, presenting photographs that discuss the realities of competing for perfection; Claudia Aires, whose color photographs from India diverge from a traditional travelogue to explore memory, “the other,” and a sense of place; Alicia Baird, whose lyric photographs encourage wonder of ordinary occasions and interactions; Jeremy Brinn, who presents illustrations of mug-shot photos in the format of the board game Guess Who, discussing issues of race, class, and identity; Nicole Fireman, who presents Kellie’s Wish, a photo-illustrated children’s book and prints, about a young girl who struggles with hair as a form of identity; Dana Michele Hems, whose installation of sculptural pod formations questions the lines between nature, reality, and fantasy; Sidney Lo, whose year-long project entitled What Are You Wearing Today? examines an obsessive self-documenting culture through message boards and online communities; Tamara Porras, whose color photographs explore Brooklyn’s changing landscape and the importance of cultural preservation; Kristina Pugh, whose photographs explore the human need to create an identity naturally related to but also purposely detached from the external world in which we live; Brooks Saucedo-McQueen, whose multimedia piece incorporates diarist and found video and still photographs exploring sexuality and violence in media culture; and Kimmy Wentling, whose black-and-white photographs present a portrait of what it means to be a young man in the United States.

The Department of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts is a four-year B.F.A. program centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. Situated within New York University, the program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum and a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts.
