Glucksman Ireland House of New York University, located at One Washington Mews (at Fifth Avenue), will host several special events in April, including an April 24 talk by author Nuala O’Faolain, entitled “Reporting the U.S. in the New Ireland.” Admission to events is free to Ireland House members and those with an NYU ID; for all others, $10 admission to regular events and $15 for Blarney Star Concert Series events. - Thursday, April 3, 7 p.m. Barra Ó Donnabháin Memorial Lecture: “Todhchaí na Gaeilge san aonú aois is fiche: The Future of the Irish Language in the 21st Century” by Éamon Ó Cuív, T.D., Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. This lecture series commemorates a beloved and influential teacher and advocate of the language in the United States. A grandson of Éamon De Valera, Ó Cuív has been a Dáil Deputy representing Galway West since 1992. In 2006, his department announced substantial funding support for the teaching of the Irish Language at third level institutions overseas. Lecture will be in English and Irish.
- Thursday, April 10, 7 p.m. Book launch: Cormac K.H. O’Malley launches ‘No Surrender Here!’ The Civil War Papers of Ernie O’Malley 1922-1924 as well as a previously unpublished manuscript by his father, Rising Out: Sean Connolly of Longford, 1980-1921. Joe Lee, Ireland House director, provides introductory remarks.
- Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m. Discussion: Irish language writer-in-residence at National University of Ireland, Galway, Séamas Mac Annaidh speaks about his life and work. He has worked in many genres, in both the Irish and English languages. His most recent novel Dioscó Dé (2006) is set in Turkey. Presentation to be in English and Irish.
- Friday, April 18, 9 p.m. Blarney Star Concert Series: Two female Asian American fiddlers, Dana Lyn and Tina Lech, team up to play Irish music. They will be accompanied by Donna Long on piano.
- Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m. Lecture: “Reporting the U.S. in the New Ireland” by journalist and author Nuala O’Faolain. O’Faolain’s memoirs, Are You Somebody? and Almost There, her novel My Dream of You, and a history, The Story of Chicago May, were all New York Times bestsellers.
