The plot follows two handsome gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, who have turned the heads of the pretty contadine. Blindfolded, the two men choose two women, Tessa and Gianetta, to take as their brides. Soon after, the grand inquisitor, Don Alhambra, arrives and informs them that either Giuseppe or Marco are the King of Barataria, and they must leave their wives to rule their kingdom. As the frivolity continues, the gondoliers end up without their wives, monarchs of a kingdom, and unintentional bigamists. As the story unravels, the characters end up with their rightful partners and order is restored. The Gondoliers, Gilbert and Sullivans last great success, premiered on December 7, 1889 at the Savoy Theatre in Londons West End.
The production will be directed by Doug Hodge, with music direction by Brian Gill. The cast and orchestra will feature the talented undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from the department of music and performing arts professions at NYUs Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
