As the country celebrates National Poetry Month in April, the New York University Creative Writing Program continues its Spring Reading Series with nine special readings and events that are free and open to the public. Events are held in the program’s new home in Greenwich Village - the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House, located at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted. A schedule of events follows:
- Thursday, April 3, 7 p.m. Fiction reading and conversation: Graphic novelist Ben Katchor, author of Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, The Jew of New York, and the forthcoming The Dairy Restaurant, will read from his work and converse with Lawrence Weschler, director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU.
- Thursday, April 10, 7 p.m. Poetry reading and conversation: Poet Tomaz Salamun, the author of more than 30 collections of poems in Slovenian, including 10 published in English, and Brian Henry, author of Quarantine and The Stripping Point, co-editor of Verse magazine, and translator of Salamun’s Woods and Chalices, will read from their works and discuss the relationship between writers and their translators. Funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc., with public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
- Friday, April 11, 7 p.m. The New Salon: Fiction Writers in Conversation: Nathan Englander, author of a short story collection, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, and a novel, The Ministry of Special Cases, both of which were international bestsellers, will read and converse with Darin Strauss, best-selling author and NYU associate clinical professor.
- Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m. Poetry reading: Three poets are featured. Mark Doty is author of six books of poems and winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award; his latest book is a memoir, Dog Years. Marie Howe is the author of The Good Thief, What the Living Do, and most recently, The Kingdom of Ordinary Time. Phillis Levin is the author of Temples and Fields, The Afterimage, Mercury, and the forthcoming May Day.
- Friday, April 18, 1 p.m. Matinee reading series: April Bernard, author of three poetry collections, including Swan Electric, and a novel, Pirate Jenny, and Richard McCann, author of Mother of Sorrows, a short story collection, and Ghost Letters, a collection of poems, read from their works.
- Friday, April 18, 7 p.m. Emerging Writers Reading Series: This reading showcases the talents of NYU’s graduate Creative Writing Program and features a special guest. Tonight’s guest is John Edgar Wideman, winner of a MacArthur genius grant and the first two-time recipient of the International PEN/Faulkner Award. His most recent book is God’s Gym. Note venue: KGB Bar, 85 E. 4th Street.
- Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m. Goldwater Hospital Writing Project Benefit Reading: Honoring poet Marie Ponsot and the Goldwater Hospital Writers, with an introduction by Phillis Levin. Voluntary donation requested. Note venue: NYU’s Vanderbilt Hall, Greenberg Lounge, 40 Washington Square South.
- Friday, April 25, 7 p.m. Undergraduate Student Reading: Advanced undergraduate students selected by Creative Writing faculty read poetry and fiction. Hosted by George Foy, NYU visiting faculty member.
- Friday, April 25, 7 p.m. Poetry reading: Cave Canem presents The Ringing Ear. An evening of poetry that takes an innovative look at “The South,” as contributors read from The Ringing Ear anthology. Note venue: 19 University Place, first floor auditorium.
