Three contributors to a timely book called “Lessons From Iraq: Avoiding the Next War” will convene at NYU Wagner at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 to explore American conduct in the world and principles for determining future military intervention abroad. The school is located in the historic Puck Building, 2nd Floor, 295 Lafayette Street. (@ Houston), lower Manhattan.
The panel discussion - sponsored by the Office for International Programs at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University, and the New American Foundation’s Arms and Security Initiative - will feature:
- Frances FitzGerald, journalist and author of “Fire in the Lake: The Vietnamese and the Americans in Vietnam,” which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. (Her chapter in the “Lessons From Iraq” book is entitled “Ideas Floating Free: War as Demonstration Model.”)
- Aziz Huq, director of the Liberty and National Security Project at NYU’s Brennan Center for Justice and co-author of “Unchecked and Unbalanced: Presidential Power in a Time of Terror.” (His chapter is “Torture No More.”)
- Jeffrey Laurenti, senior fellow and director of policy programs at The Century Foundation, who has written extensively on international security issues. (His chapter is “America’s Slide: From Leadership to Isolation.”)
The moderator will be William D. Hartung, co-editor of “Lessons from Iraq,” and director of the New America Foundation’s Arms and Security Initiative. Hartung, who is writing a book about Lockheed Martin, contributed a chapter entitled “Invitations to Steal: War Profiteering in Iraq.”
Copies of the book (published by Paradigm Publishers) will be available for purchase at an 8:00 p.m. reception immediately following the discussion.
