Deutsches Haus at New York University, located at 42 Washington Mews (at University Place), will host several special events in late January and February, including the opening event in the Max Weber Lecture Series on “Power, Architecture, and the Construction of Capitals” on February 21, which takes place in the Grand Room, 19 University Place.   • Tuesday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. Book presentation: The first multi-media-based History of the German Language Textbook, published by Walter de Gruyter, Inc., will be introduced.
  • Friday, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. Exhibition opening: NY/Berlin-based artist Jim Avignon displays his work in an exhibit entitled “Always Trouble with the ‘Über-Ich’”. On view through March 1.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 5, 7 p.m. Lecture: “On War and Misjudgments” by Carolin Emcke, reporter with Die Zeit.
  • Friday, Feb. 8, 6:30 p.m. Film series, “In-Tune with German,” opens with a screening of The Harmonists (1998, Joseph Vilsmaier, 115 min.). The film tells the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, the legendary singing group that became an overnight sensation in prewar Germany. In German with English subtitles.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 12, 7 p.m. Lecture: “Music of the Body” by Miro Magloire of the New Chamber Ballet is a conversation on ballet, sound, gestures, notation, tradition, and silence.
  • Friday, Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m. Reading: Deutsches Haus writer-in-residence Alain Claude Sulzer, author of The Perfect Waiter. In German and English.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. Panel discussion: “Does Germany/the EU Have a Foreign Policy? Does Anyone Care?” with David Frum, fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Bernard Young, NYU Stern School of Business; Matthias Rüb, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung; and Marcia Pally, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
  • Thursday, Feb. 21, 6 p.m. Max Weber Lecture Series: “Power, Architecture, and the Construction of Capitals” opens with a lecture entitled “New Capitals in New Nations: Comparative Perspectives” by Michael Minkenberg, Viadrina University, Frankfurt (Oder). Note venue: Grand Room, 19 University Place (between Waverly Place and 8th St.).
  • Friday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m. Film series continues with Hot Summer (1967, Joachim Hasler 91 min.) East German beach party musical about a group of teens on a Baltic Sea vacation. In German, English subtitles.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m. Lecture: “World Literature, Already Translated” by Robert Stockhammer, Freie Universität Berlin. This event is held in collaboration with the NYU Department of German.
  • Thursday, Feb. 28, 6 p.m. Max Weber Lecture Series continues with a lecture on “State and Federal Power and the Creation of the American Capital” by Kenneth Bowling, George Washington University. Note venue: Grand Room, 19 University Place.
  • Friday, Feb. 29, 6:30 p.m. Reading: “Lange Weile - über das Warten. Thoughts on Waiting” by Andrea Köhler, cultural correspondent, Neue Zürcher Zeitung. In German and English.
