NYU today announced several projects and activities it will be hosting during the spring semester as part of its ongoing sustainability initiative. The initiative, and subsequent Green Action Plan, were created with the goal of reducing NYU’s environmental footprint and saving energy.

FOCUS THE NATION
This Thursday, January 31st, NYU will celebrate Focus the Nation, a national day of action on climate change. Nearly a thousand colleges and universities will participate in what is projected to be one of the largest teach-ins in U.S. history. NYU will be focusing on “local solutions to the climate crisis” through events ranging from research-focused faculty panels to collaborative sessions linking political engagement and individual action. All events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

A detailed schedule is online at www.nyu.edu/sustainability/focusthenation.

EDUCATING FOR SUSTAINABILITY LECTURE SERIES
NYU’s “Educating for Sustainability” lecture series returns with two more public talks by visiting environmental leaders and scholars. Science historian Naomi Oreskes will present “The Denial of Global Warming” this Monday, February 4th at 6:00 PM in the Jurow Lecture Hall in the Silver Center. On March 10th, scholar Robert Gottlieb will discuss urban environmental policy in his talk “Rediscovering Los Angeles: Nature and Community in the Global City.”

The lecture series is free and open to the public. For more information and to RSVP, visit: www.nyu.edu/rsvp/event.php?e_id=658.

NYU GREEN GRANTS
This year’s application cycle for NYU GREEN GRANTS is now underway. Green Grants fund projects that spark the imagination of the NYU community and advance NYU’s future as a sustainable university. Green Grants are issued to NYU students, faculty and staff who sponsor projects that reduce adverse environmental impacts, educate and engage the community, demonstrate the viability of best practices and technologies, and/or advance applied research goals. Last year, fifteen projects received grants ranging from $1,000 - $20,000.

There will be a Green Grants Information Session at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, February 5th in the Kimmel Center, Room 909. The session is an opportunity for those thinking about developing a project or those who have already submitted a proposal, to ask for help and advice and meet possible project partners.

To RSVP, visit www.nyu.edu/rsvp/event.php?e_id=660.
