The Board of Trustees of the ADEAGies Foundation voted to give the 2008 Vision Award in the Dental Educator category to Dr. Alfano in recognition of the articulation and pursuit of an idea or set of ideals, perspectives, or solutions that attracts the energetic commitment of our colleagues, profession, or industry, creating broader meaning, while effectively bridging the present with the future of global oral health and oral health education.
As Dean of the NYU College of Dentistry from 1998 to 2006, Dr. Alfano put forth a vision of NYUCD becoming the dental institution with the greatest impact globally on the health of society. To that end, he led a project to rebuild the colleges infrastructure, recruit world-class faculty, and transform the practice of dentistry a vision subsequently expressed in the groundbreaking formal alliance of the NYU College of Dentistry and the NYU Nursing Program, which created a new paradigm for health professions education and healthcare delivery by establishing a College of Nursing within the NYU College of Dentistry.
Dr. Charles N. Bertolami, the Herman Robert Fox Dean of the NYU College of Dentistry, said, Michael Alfano was an extraordinary dean, transforming the NYU College of Dentistry into an institution that is recognized today as one of the nations top schools. At the same time, Mikes vision catalyzed the growth of an outstanding community of scholars, and his collegiality, sincerity, and decency fostered the creation of a remarkable esprit de corps among students, faculty, and staff.
The NYU College of Dentistry, with its College of Nursing, salutes the ADEAGies Foundation on the establishment of The Gies Awards, and takes great pride in the selection of Dr. Michael C. Alfano as the inaugural recipient of the Gies Award for Vision by a Dental Educator.
