The New York University Creative Writing Program Spring 2008 Reading Series continues in February with a number of special readings and events. Most events are held in the program’s new home in Greenwich Village - the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House, located at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted. - Saturday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m. Poetry reading: “Not for Mothers Only” with Lee Ann Brown, Gillian Conoley, Beth Ann Fennelly, Miranda Field, Annie Finch, Akilah Oliver, Alicia Ostriker, Molly Peacock, Eleni Silelianos, Anne Waldman, Zhang Er, Rachel Zucker, and more. Readings from Not for Mothers Only: Contemporary Poems on Child-Getting & Child-Rearing. Co-sponsored with Fence Books.
- Wednesday, Feb. 6, 1 p.m. Fiction reading and conversation with Chicano writer Dagoberto Gilb, author of The Magic of Blood, winner of the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award, and Woodcuts of Women, and editor of Hecho en Tejas: An Anthology of Texas Mexican Literature. This event is part of the new “Matinee Series.”
- Thursday, Feb. 7, 7 p.m. Fiction reading and conversation with MacArthur Fellow Lydia Davis, short story virtuoso and author of the collections Varieties of Disturbance, Break It Down, and Samuel Johnson Is Indignant as well as a novel, The End of the Story.
- Friday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m. Special event: “String Talks,” a reading and performance, with Anne Carson. A multi-media piece involving red string, a dancer or two, and audiovisual elements, with the collaboration of Robert Currie, randomizer, and Mark Bibbens, introduction and backup vocals. Carson is the 2008 Lillian Vernon Writer-in-Residence. Her latest collection is Decreation: Poetry, Essays, Opera. Co-sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Society of America, and Poets House. Note venue: NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, 566 LaGuardia Place. Free tickets available at the Skirball Box Office beginning Feb. 5.
- Thursday, Feb. 14, 7 p.m. Valentine’s Day Poetry Reading: poets Billy Collins, Deborah Landau, David Lehman, Noah Michelson, Honor Moore, Molly Peacock, and Mark Strand read from The Best American Erotic Poems: From 1800 to the Present, edited by David Lehman. Co-sponsored with the College of Arts and Science. Note venue: NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East (at Waverly Place).
- Friday, Feb. 15, 1 p.m. Fiction reading and conversation with novelist Elif Shafak. Author of five novels, most recently The Saint of Incipient Insanities, she currently resides in Instanbul. She will be in conversation with cultural critic and NYU professor Susie Linfield. This event is in the new “Matinee Series.”
- Thursday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. The New Salon: Fiction Writers in Conversation features Australian-born Peter Carey, twice winner of the Booker Prize. His most recent novel is His Illegal Self. He will be in conversation with Martin Roper in conversation with Darin Strauss, best-selling author and NYU professor. Co-sponsored with the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies Writing Program.
- Thursday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. The New Salon: Poets in Conversation features Rachel Zucker, author of The Last Clear Narrative, Eating in the Underworld, and The Bad Wife Handbook. She will be in conversation with Deborah Landau, director of NYU Creative Writing Program and author of Orchidelirium. Co-sponsored with the Poetry Society of America.
- Friday, Feb. 29, 7 p.m. The New Salon: Fiction Writers in Conversation features Amy Hempel, author of four collections of stories, published together as The Collected Stories, which was selected as one of the New York Times’ “Ten Best Books of the Year” in 2006. She will be in conversation with Darin Strauss, best-selling novelist and NYU professor.
