Born in Mallorca in 1232, Ramon Llull was a poet, novelist, philosopher, man of action, and missionary. He was also the first writer to develop an extensive body of theology, philosophy, literature, logic, and science in a Romance language, Catalan.

On Thursday and Friday, March 6 and 7, New York University’s Catalan Center will celebrate the publication of The Art and Logic of Ramon Llull: A User’s Guide by Anthony Bonner with a symposium entitled “A Mind for the Ages: Ramon Llull, Doctor Illuminatus.” This special event is co-sponsored with the NYU department of Spanish and Portuguese and the University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center.

Llull’s influence is both historical, on such philosophers as Leibniz and Bruno, and contemporary, as Llull has been claimed as a precursor by cyberneticists, structuralists, experts in robotics, and voting theorists. (The Encyclopedia Britannica suggests that if American polling experts had followed Llull on voting processes, the 2000 elections would have gone to Al Gore.)

“A Mind for the Ages” takes place at NYU’s King Juan Carlos Center, 53 Washington Square South. For further information and a complete schedule, contact 212.998.8255.

Paul Freedman, Yale University, is the opening night speaker (March 6, 6:15 p.m.), speaking on “Catalonia and the Mediterranean in the Era of Ramon Llull.” On Friday, March 7, beginning at 11 a.m., speakers include Temple University’s Montserrat Piera on “Ramon Llull, the Quest and Medieval Romance”; Friedrich Pukelsheim from Universitat Augsburg discussing “Llull and Electoral Process”; Harvey Hames, Ben Gurion University, on “Did Ramon Llull Know Kabbalah?”; and the keynote speaker, author Anthony Bonner.
