On Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m., an evening of traditional music and song, Airneál na Bealtaine, will be celebrated with NYU students and local musicians, hosted by Irish Language Lecturer, Pádraig Ó Cearúill. Mick Moloney, Global Distinguished Clinical Professor of Music and Irish Studies at NYU, will lead the Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra, a group of both undergraduate and graduate students who share tunes learned by ear.
On Friday, May 16, at 9 p.m., the Blarney Star Concert Series presents New York fiddler Tony DeMarco celebrating the release of his new Smithsonian Folkways recording, “The Sligo Indians.” A Brooklyn native of mixed Italian and Irish descent, DeMarco is a master of the intricate ornamentation, swinging rhythm, and profuse melodic improvisation that characterize the famed County Sligo fiddle style.
