The John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress welcomes United States Senator Chuck Hagel to New York University on Monday, April 28, 2008 to speak about the challenging issues he raises in his new book, “America: Our Next Chapter.”

The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in NYU’s Eisner Lubin Auditorium, 4th Floor, Kimmel Center for Student Life, 60 Washington Square South, New York, N.Y. (Doors open at 5:30 p.m.)

Colleagues on both sides of the Senate floor have long admired Chuck Hagel, Nebraska’s junior senator, for his common-sense approach to the challenges of our times. The Los Angeles Times has praised his “bold positions on foreign policy and national security” and wondered, “What’s not to like?” Time magazine called him a staunch Republican yet a “hero to liberals.” In his timely book “America: Our Next Chapter,” Hagel offers a hard-hitting examination of the state of our nation and provides substantial and meaningful proposals to guide America back onto the right path.

The Senator’s book deals with such issues as the health care crisis, immigration, and Social Security and Medicaid reform, and global climate change. He confronts foreign policy problems that he contends the current administration has bungled or ignored, including China’s growing economy, control of U.S. debt, India’s and Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities, and Iran’s aggressive political, ideological and nuclear stances. He decries pervasive third-world poverty, arguing that this is where the real fight against terrorism must begin. He of course gives a candid examination of the Iraq War, which he describes as a debacle.

Hagel’s visit is hosted by the Brademas Center for the Study of Congress, a research center housed at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. The program for the event includes a Question & Answer session with the audience, followed by a wine and cheese reception. Copies of the book will be available for purchase before the program.
