Festival of Best Films from Top Film Schools from Around the World Will Be Part of Official Opening of the New Tisch School of the Arts Asia Campus

Next Reel 2007 Will Feature 67 Films from 22 Countries and $30,000 in prizes

Festival Dates: October 7-13, 2007

This year, the Next Reel International Film Festival, featuring young filmmakers from around the world, will be held in Singapore, to celebrate the opening of New York University’s new Tisch School of the Arts Asia campus. The 2007 festival dates are October 7 through 13. Next Reel will showcase 67 narrative, documentary, and experimental short films from 31 film schools representing 22 countries: Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Korea, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States. The highlight of the Festival, one of the largest of its kind, is the four days of public screenings. Featured also will be a program of guest speakers, workshops, and panel discussions.

Special guests of Next Reel 2007 will include filmmaker Brett Ratner (Rush Hour trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand), along with director Peng Xiaolian, cinematographer Jong Lin, and television commercial producer Edmund Cheung. The showcase of short films portion of the Festival will take place October 9, 10, 11 & 12. Festival shorts will be screened at The Cathay Cineplex, located at 2 Handy Road on Levels 5 & 6 of the Cathay. The screenings and the closing night ceremony on Saturday October 13 at 5pm are open to the public and admission is free. Tickets are available for collection beginning Thursday, September 27 via the Box Office, Levels 1 & 5, the Cathay Cineplex, 2 Handy Road. Pari Shirazi, vice dean of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and president of NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia, said, “The Next Reel International Film Festival provides the perfect complement to one of our crowning achievements - the opening of NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia. This festival celebrates the vision and ingenuity of the future international film industry by exposing a new audience to these innovative young filmmakers.”

Festival participants and invited guests will be able to attend various featured events hosted by Next Reel and the MDA Media Development Authority Singapore. The events include: a producing panel discussion with television commercial producer for the greater China region, Edmund Cheung; writer, director, producer Peng Xiaolian of Shanghai Women, Shanghai Story, and most recently, Shanghai Rumba; and writer/director Jay Anania of Her Name is Carla and Day on Fire; an editing workshop featuring John Tintori, editor of Mister Wonderful, Eight Men Out, and Dogfight, and chair of the Graduate Film Department of Tisch School of the Arts and NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia; and a screening of Shanghai Rumba followed by a Q&A with director Peng Xiaolian and cinematographer Jong Lin, of Shanghai Rumba, Bend it Like Beckham, and Eat Drink Man Woman.

Founded in 1993, the Next Reel International Film Festival is a biennial event organized by a team of faculty and staff from the Tisch School of the Arts. Next Reel, which typically takes place in New York City but travels abroad, is the international counterpart to the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television’s First Run Festival. Many of the films in these festivals go on to screen at premiere international film festivals, including Cannes, Toronto, Venice, and Berlin.
