The Master’s Program in Global Public Health at New York University will host a presentation on “The New National Health Plan & Policy in Liberia: Opportunities and Challenges in the Reconstruction of a Post-Conflict State.” The event, which will feature Liberian Deputy Minister of Health Tornorlah Varpilah, and Lead Economist at the World Bank Mr. Alexander Preker, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, from 12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. at the NYU Kimmel Center for University Life, Room 910, 60 Washington Square South.
Fourteen years of war left Liberia in ruins and had an especially grievous impact on the health care system. Given that the old system was destroyed, the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare sees an opportunity to create a new system drawing from best practices. To date, Liberia has made incredible progress, but significant challenges remain. Join us for this special presentation as Liberian Deputy Minister of Health Tornorlah Varpilah presents an overview of the health sector in Liberia, including the Ministry’s vision for health, some recent health system accomplishments, key elements of the new national health policy and plan, the current situation with an emphasis on the human resources gap, and what is being done to address the gap and other issues. Mr. Alexander Preker, Lead Economist at the World Bank, will offer further comment and discussion of the opportunities and challenges faced by the International Development community in supporting the reconstruction of Post Conflict States such as Liberia.
