Event Date: Wednesday, November 7th at 7 p.m. at 721 Broadway - Free Admission
The Performance Studies Ensemble of New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts will perform the world premiere of The Red Carpet on Wednesday, November 7. The performance piece is an original work meant to engage the thousands of New Yorkers passing by who do not have an opportunity to attend one of the many live red carpet events held before award shows each year in cities like New York and Los Angeles.
The Red Carpet will take place in front of the Tisch School of the Arts, located at 721 Broadway, on November 7 at 7:00 p.m. There is no admission charge. The Red Carpet will be the kick-off performance of the 13th Performance Studies International (PSi) Conference-entitled Happening, Performance, Event-to be hosted by the Department of Performance Studies at the Tisch School in collaboration with Performa, the performance biennial.
The Red Carpet is written, directed, and will be performed by 15 founding members of the Performance Studies Ensemble. The group created The Red Carpet as an invitation to a happening that will not only deploy and recontextualize the stereotypes of such events, but will also attempt to revitalize this cultural genre by adding the ensembles very own, artistically idiosyncratic touches.
Founded in the fall of 2007, the Performance Studies Ensemble comprises a diverse group of performance studies scholars who have been working closely together for the last six weeks to produce The Red Carpet. Several familiar actors and political figures will be present, including Karen Finley, the well-known performance artist who serves as the honorary chair of the Board of the Performance Studies Ensemble. As you know, I only involve myself with works of art that I find socially relevant and politically engaging, said Finley. If this performance piece happens to shock or awe, so be it.
