Breyten Breytenbach, acclaimed poet, fiction writer, dramatist, essayist, painter, anti-apartheid activist, and Global Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at New York University, is the featured reader of the Friday, November 9, “Emerging Writers Reading Series,” sponsored by NYU’s Creative Writing Program.

The event, which begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public, takes place at the Program’s Lillian Vernon Creative Writing House, 58 W. 10th Street. (Please note: The venue was changed from an earlier location.) Free and open to the public, the reading will also include NYU graduate Creative Writing students Will Hubbard, Brooke Lewis, Dante Micheaux, and Nikki Moustaki. Breytenbach, who, as a committed opponent of apartheid served two terms in solitary confinement in South African prisons and wrote The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist, is most recently the author of Windcatcher: New & Selected Poems. His other many works include Dog Heart: A Memoir, and Lady One, a selection of love poems. He is known as the finest living poet of the Afrikaans language.

The Emerging Writers Reading Series showcases the talent of NYU’s graduate Creative Writing Program with readings that feature an established writer as a special guest. Other guests in the fall series have included Ana Castillo and Sam Hamill; Mary Gordon will be featured at a reading at the KGB bar, 85 East 4th Street, on December 14, from 7 to 9 p.m.
