The National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Faculty of Law and the New York University’s School of Law will launch a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Juris Doctor (J.D.) dual degree program (the “NYU-NUS Dual J.D./LL.B Program”) in mid-2008.

In this latest collaboration between the two universities, NUS law undergraduates will be able to obtain both a LL.B. degree from NUS and J.D. degree from NYU in five years. Interested students may apply during their first or second year of study at the NUS Faculty of Law and those admitted into the program will spend three years at NUS and two years at NYU in New York City.

Professor Tan Cheng Han, senior counsel and dean of the NUS Law School, said, “I am absolutely delighted with our latest initiative with the NYU law school which brings our already close partnership to a new level. For legal professionals who want to understand US law, there is no better route than the pursuit of a Juris Doctor degree and few come as highly regarded as NYU’s. By allowing our students to apply to NYU’s J.D. program in their first or second year, NYU is also demonstrating the confidence that it has in our students and the quality and sophistication of the NUS law education.”

Professor Richard Revesz, dean of NYU’s School of Law observed, “This new program strengthens and deepens our relationship with NUS, but also our commitment to a truly global legal education. NYU School of Law prides itself on the high standards and rigorous content of our J.D. degree; students graduating from this program will bring with them qualifications and experiences positioning them to be leaders in the United States, or Asia, or both.”

This new dual law degree program is the third collaboration between the two leading law schools. The first collaboration, the NYU@NUS dual graduate degree program, was launched this May and allowed students from around the world to earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from both universities. The second offering, a dual LL.B./LL.M. law degree program, is set to commence in July 2008 and gives law undergraduate students at NUS the opportunity to obtain a LL.M., in addition to their LL.B., from a top US law school in the time they normally take to complete their undergraduate studies.

The NYU-NUS Dual J.D./LL.B Program is yet another feature of the NUS Faculty of Law’s diverse array of degree options for its graduates. Students can choose to focus on law subjects during their course of study, or opt to pursue a variety of double degree programs from within NUS such as Law and Economics, Law and Business, Law and Life Science, and Law and Public Policy. Alternatively, they can pursue a minor in many of the disciplines offered at NUS. At the same time, they can opt to go on student exchange to more than 50 law schools around the world.

As Asia’s Global Law School, the NUS Faculty of Law has been in the forefront of curricular innovations that aim to produce law graduates who can rise above the increasingly global demands of legal practice. This latest program with NYU will enhance the rich menu of options available to NUS law students.
