Courant's Venkatesh Wins Packard Foundation Fellowship

Akshay Venkatesh, an associate professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has been named a recipient of a 2007 Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering. Venkatesh, 25, was one of 20 scientific researchers to receive a fellowship. Each fellow receives an unrestricted research grant of $625,000 over five years.

November 15 marks the 10th annual “America Recycles Day,” in which Americans are encouraged to recycle and to buy recycled products. But while the benefits of household recycling are clear, New York University Anthropologist Robin Nagle says, for the most part, it avoids the bigger contributors to the nation’s solid waste problem.

The New York University Master s Program in Global Public Health will host a discussion with noted author and public health specialist Dr. Helen Epstein on her new and influential book, The Invisible Cure: Africa, the West, & the Fight Against Aids. The presentation will take place on Monday, December 3, 2007, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the King Juan Carlos I Center, Auditorium, 53 Washington Square South, Manhattan.
