NYU has received a gift of $100,000 dollars from an anonymous donor to honor Yevgeniy “Eugene” Marshalik, the NYU sophomore and Auxiliary Police Officer who was killed along with his partner while on duty in the streets of Greenwich Village on the night of Wednesday, March 14th. In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the income from the endowed gift will be used to provide scholarship money to two undergraduates who demonstrate a commitment to community service of the sort exemplified by Eugene Marshalik.

In making the gift, the donor – an NYU alum – conveyed to University officials his belief that Eugene typified students at NYU, who treat and value each other as members of a close-knit community, and who, through community service, work together to make the University and the city a better place.

Matthew Santirocco, dean of NYU’s College of Arts and Science, said, “Eugene’s courage and dedication to community service is an example to everyone in the College of Arts and Science. The swiftness, senselessness, and injustice of his death – while seeking to safeguard the streets of our neighborhood – was a terrible tragedy. Any effort to honor him must weave together both his love of NYU and his devotion to public service.

“That is why this gift, given by an anonymous donor, is simply a perfect tribute: it will support other NYU students who demonstrate a commitment to community service. I have spoken with Eugene’s mother, and she was pleased to learn of this establishing gift for the Yevgeniy (Eugene) Marshalik Memorial Fund; many others have sought ways to honor Eugene’s sacrifice and keep his memory alive, and this fund will be open to their contributions as well.

“I would like to thank the donor. That person’s decision to remain nameless is very much in keeping with Eugene’s own modest, self-effacing, and generous approach to serving the public good.”

Details about the scholarship and the application procedures will be available from the NYU Office of Financial Aid in early April.

Those wishing to contribute to the Fund may send checks payable to New York University to the Office for University Development, 25 West Fourth Street, New York, NY 10012. Additional information about making gifts to the fund may be obtained from David Koehler in the Office for University Development at 212-998-6995.
