New York University historian Ada Ferrer, whose Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-98 (University of North Carolina Press, 1999) won the Berkshire Book Prize, is available for comment on Cuba’s history and the legacy of Fidel Castro.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais reported this week that Castro faces a “very grave prognosis,” according to sources at Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon hospital. A doctor from the hospital traveled to Havana in December to examine the Cuban leader.

Reporters interested in speaking with Ferrer should contact James Devitt, NYU’s Office of Public Affairs, at 212.998.6808 or james.devitt@nyu.edu.

Ferrer, who left Cuba in 1963, has done extensive research on Cuba and has repeatedly traveled to the country since 1990. Her scholarship primarily focuses on the country’s colonial period. For a list of Ferrer’s complete works, go to http://history.fas.nyu.edu/object/adaferrer
