Lawrence Wright, Tues., Sep. 12, 12-1:15pm, King Juan Carlos Center, 53 Washington Square South (betw. Sullivan and Thompson)
Wright’s The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda And The Road To 9/11 has been hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “detailed” … “heart-stopping” … “written with style and verve” … “a thoughtful examination of the world that produced the men who brought us 9/11, and of their progeny who bedevil us today.” The author, a writer for The New Yorker, will dissect the reporting and writing and the vital issues explored in his ground-breaking work.
Gay Talese, Thurs., Sept. 14, 6:00-7:30 p.m., Cantor Boardroom, the Kaufman Ctr., 44 W. 4th St. 11th floor, suite 11-75
Gay Talese’s magazine stories are models of vibrant writing and precision reporting. His revelatory books have explored many worlds - from The New York Times, to the Mafia, to the sex industry, to the American immigrant experience. In his new book, A Writer’s Life, he has set down the critical interplay between experience and writing. How has he found his subjects? What has stimulated, inspired, and sometimes blocked his writing? Talese will speak about the everyday and lifelong challenges of producing great work.
Ron Suskind, Tues., Sept. 19, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Jurow Lecture Hall, Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East (at Washington Place)
“Why Do Journalists Matter?” will be the focus for Suskind, whose books and articles have provided a look at the workings of the Bush White House, revealing the administration as intent on going to war in Iraq. His latest book, The One Percent Doctrine, journeys deep inside America’s battle with terrorism, from the Oval Office to the streets of Karachi.
