In a rare appearance in the United States, French photographer, writer, and editor Suzanne Doppelt will open an exhibition of her photographs on Friday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. with a reading from her recent book, RING, RANG, WRONG. The event will take place at New York University’s Deutsches Haus, 42 Washington Mews (at University Place) and is free and open to the public. For more information call 212.998.8663.
The exhibition of photographs, on display through January 12, 2007, includes images from her book, which features mock-philosophical meditations on nature and the cosmos juxtaposed with her abstract photographs. NYU Professors Avital Ronell and Ulrich Baer and Eduardo Cadava from Princeton University will open the evening with introductory remarks. Doppelt will read from her book in French accompanied in English by American poet and translator Cole Swensen.
While teaching philosophy and literature in Paris, Doppelt developed an interest in photography. She has exhibited at numerous venues, including Centre Culturel Français, Damas; Ecole des Beaux Arts de Nîmes; Pavillon des arts, Paris; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Galerie Pennings in Holland. Among her other publications are several books which combine images and text including Totem, a book of mock-ethnology.
