New York University and the Mexican government will announce an agreement making available Spanish language multimedia and technology-enhanced instructional materials, free of charge, to Spanish-speaking immigrants in New York City and State on Wed., March 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (53 Washington Square South, between Thompson and Sullivan Streets).

Participants include: Guillermo Linares, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs; Carmen Fariña, Deputy Chancellor, New York City Department of Education; Maria Santos, director of English language learners, New York City Department of Education; NYU Professor Pedro Noguera, director of NYU’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education; NYU Professor Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, co-director of Immigration Studies at NYU; David Ramirez, a leading researcher in bilingual education; and representatives from the Mexican consulate in New York, the New York State Department of Education, and local community organizations. The event will also include presentations and discussions on immigration and education policy.

“Plazas Comunitarias” (Community Town Squares) is a $4-million donation of resources to New York City and State and is the initiative’s first agreement between Mexico and a university. Previous agreements have been made with states, including California, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington.
