New York University’s Department of Journalism will host a roundtable discussion, “Darwin, Design, and the Reporter’s Dilemma,” on Wed., March 29, 7-8:30 p.m. at NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall in Silver Center (100 Washington Square East at Washington Place). The event will include: Michael Behe, author of Darwin’s Black Box and a professor of biochemistry at Lehigh University; Massimo Pigliucci, author of Denying Evolution and an associate professor of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University; Laurie Goodstein, national religion correspondent at the New York Times; and Dan Fagin (Moderator), an associate professor of journalism at NYU.

A leading advocate of intelligent design, Behe served as a key witness in Kitzmiller, et al. v. Dover School District. Goodstein was the New York Times reporter who covered the 2005 trial, which ended in a judge’s ruling repudiating intelligent design. Pigliucci is an outspoken critic of intelligent design, an idea embraced by many Americans but rejected by the vast majority of scientists. Intelligent design asserts that the Darwin’s Theory of Evolution cannot explain the complexity and diversity of life, and that therefore an unspecified intelligent force - perhaps God - must have designed it. Panelists will address how the topic of intelligent design should be covered in the news media.
