Karpinski, who was the commander in charge of Abu Ghraib during the photographed abuses in 2003, was the only senior U.S. commander punished for the incidents. She was reduced in rank from general to colonel. She is the author, with Steven Strasser, of One Woman’s Army: The Commanding General of Abu Ghraib Tells Her Story (Miramax, 2005).
