Judith Haber, PhD,APRN,BC, FAAN, associate dean of graduate programs and Ursula Springer Professor of Nursing Leadership at the New York University College of Nursing, has received two top honors from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. She has been named Psychiatric Nurse of the Year and has received the 2005-6 Excellence in Research Award. The Nurse of the Year Award-bestowed on Dr. Haber for an unprecedented second time-recognizes lifetime achievement and leadership contributions to the psychiatric nursing specialty. The Excellence in Research Award was given for her book Nursing Research: Methods and Critical Appraisal for Evidence-Based Practice, 6th Edition, which she co-authored with Geri LoBiondo-Wood, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Dr. Haber, a family therapist and NYU faculty member since 1994, received both of these honors at the association’s November 2005 annual conference in Nashville. She is particularly renowned for her research contributions to breast cancer and mental health.
“Dr. Haber has a long history of contributions to the specialty of psychiatric nursing and to the APNA,” said Elizabeth Poster, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. “We are proud of the important outcomes of her work - especially the impact of her research on breast cancer-and her commitment to the profession.
The granting of the research award is a very competitive process, added Dr. Poster. “Many of the APNA’s 5,000 members are university faculty who submit their research for consideration, so it is quite an honor.”
Dr. Haber is a double alumna of NYU, having received a master’s degree in adult psychiatric nursing with a minor in education in 1967, and a doctorate in nursing in 1984. She has conducted extensive research in the areas of family-theory tool development and in the physical and psychosocial adjustment to illness, particularly among women with breast cancer.
