Star-studded Gala to Honor Martin Scorsese, Jane Rosenthal and Spike Lee
New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television will honor three of the most distinguished NYU graduates at their annual Gala Benefit on Friday, October 28 at Cipriani’s 42nd Street in New York City. Martin Scorsese will receive the Big Apple Award for Lifetime Achievement, Jane Rosenthal for Film Production and Commitment to New York City through co-founding Tribeca Productions and The Tribeca Film Festival, and Spike Lee for Innovation, Leadership and unwavering commitment to the education of young filmmakers.
Robert De Niro, Maurice Kanbar, Ann and Andrew Tisch, Jamie and Steve Tisch, and Sir Howard Stringer will co-chair the evening. Aptly themed “On Location,” the event will highlight the honorees’ student years through film clips and original musical tributes performed by 20 of the school’s talented musical theatre performance students.
This year’s Gala celebrates the role NYU and its distinguished alumni have played in the emergence of New York City as an international center of filmmaking. “All three of our honorees were once students of exceptional promise at NYU and all continue to inspire and influence young filmmakers around the world,” said Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell. “We believe that an investment in the promise of our students is an investment in the future of the arts.”
Founded in 1965, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts enrolls 3,700 students in fourteen programs and departments, offering BFA, MFA, MA, MPS and PhD degrees through the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, the Skirball Center for New Media, and the Institute of Performing Arts.
The School’s list of graduates includes many of today’s most celebrated artists: Pulitzer Prize winners Tony Kushner, Doug Wright and Chang Lee; Academy Award winners Charlie Kaufman, Jim Taylor, Marcia Gay Harden, Ang Lee, and Oliver Stone; Tony Award winners Billy Crystal, Rachel Sheinkin, George C.
