New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) professor Karen Karbiener, a noted Whitman scholar, leads a team of special guests invited to read selections from the poem, “Song of My Self,” with audience participation in the reading strongly encouraged. The reading is part of the South Street Seaport Museum’s four-month tribute to Walt Whitman on the 150th anniversary of the printing of Leaves of Grass. Over the July 4th weekend, “Whitman and the Promise of America, 1855-2005,” Leaves of Grass Commemorative Exhibit, opens at the South Street Seaport Museum, curated by Karbiener and Bob Phillips. The exhibition connects Leaves of Grass’ message and relevance during Whitman’s time with its significance for America today.
