On January 25, 2005, Patrick Monahan, dean of Canada’s Osgoode Hall Law School, and Richard Revesz, dean of the New York University School of Law, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch an historic joint JD-LLB Program. The program, beginning in fall 2006, will allow students to spend two years at Osgoode and two years at NYU and receive an Osgoode LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree and an NYU JD (Juris Doctor) degree. These degrees will allow program graduates to practice law in both jurisdictions.
Dean Monahan said the agreement with NYU was made possible by Dean Revesz’s “willingness and ability to think creatively about the potential synergies that can be produced by two of North America’s great legal institutions joining forces for the mutual benefit of students here and in New York.” Dean Revesz called the collaboration “a great day for both of our institutions.” He also noted that the NYU School of Law, ranked among the top five U.S. law schools by U.S. News and World Report, made the decision to become a global law school back in 1994. Today, 40 percent of NYU School of Law graduates are citizens of some 60 different countries.
